Sara Figurski
Early Care and Education (Birth to Second Grade)
Since she can remember, Sara Figurski has volunteered at her Sunday School and helped with childcare. When it came time to enroll at Delaware Tech and decide on a major, her mom reminded her that she works well with kids.
"I decided to embrace that and started volunteering at events that were for children so I could work with them, and I have loved it ever since," Figurski said. "I chose this major because it will give me experience with a wide array of age ranges and will help me find out what age I want to teach."
Figurski was homeschooled starting in 6th grade, so she felt attending college would provide her more opportunities to meet people her own age. One way she enhanced her college experience was by joining the Education Club.
"The Education Club has given me a couple opportunities to meet people in my field and it was fun to talk about childcare with people who understand this field of study," she said.
During her time at the College, Figurski said she has had a lot of fun in her classes, and has learned a lot. She has also matured and learned how to balance everything in life.
"If you overwork yourself, you'll end up getting burnt out and that is not good, so I still have to remember to take breaks and relax," she said. "And, sometimes I have to put working on College assignments before other things in order to meet the deadline, or sometimes I have to stop doing a certain hobby or something in order to take some stuff off of my plate."
After graduation, Figurski hopes to begin working in a daycare or preschool as an aid to gain more childcare experience. Her dream is to one day open her own Christian daycare or preschool.
"I have not seen a lot of Christian childcare settings while driving around Delaware, and that is something I want to change," Figurski said. "My daycare would be affordable for all families, no matter their financial status, and will allow families to have access to children's books for at home and in school activities, as well as coats, gloves, and any other weather clothing materials, which families can borrow while their child or children are enrolled in my childcare facility."
